When the then ICI Chief Executive John McAdam announced a new strategy in 2003, he also outlined eight Guiding Principles which apply to everyone in the Group.

When ICI’s strategy was updated in 2006, the Guiding Principles remained unchanged. They are:

1. Favour ICI over your business, strategic business unit, function or location

2. Represent the Group and, therefore, all have a share in problems and solutions

3. Respect each other and our responsibilities and proactively seek each others’ input to ensure full, constructive, fact-based debate up front

4. Move forward in a unified way once the direction has been set

5. Reliably deliver on our promises, or provide early warning if a problem is occurring so there are no surprises

6. Push ourselves to a high level of excellence and regularly compare ourselves with others inside and outside of the Group to ensure we are achieving it

7. Conduct our business with integrity and in full accordance with the ICI Way

8. Above all else, value performance, urgency, openness and safety.
