These pages reflect ICI’s strong culture of product development, one that is both close to our markets and customers - driven by the desire for even stronger attention to our customers’ needs – and at the same time innovative and far-reaching – creating opportunities for products not yet conceived by our customers.
In order to provide customised products for our customers and achieve major innovations, our R&D organisation is rooted in our businesses and it is underpinned by world-class strategic and applied research performed in our linked global laboratories in Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA, and at Wilton and Slough in the UK.
Our expertise lies in three broad areas of science: Materials Science in which we design and understand the effects and tailor the performances of many of our products including adhesives, electronic materials, paints, food ingredients and household and personal care ingredients; Molecular Sciences in which we focus on new and better ways of making high value organic monomers for the diverse range of specialty polymers we produce; and Measurement and Modelling that we use to characterise and understand what we’ve made.
We don’t just make and sell chemicals as ingredients; we formulate them into products for our customers and for direct use by consumers. We apply formulation science to achieve desired effects and properties of products through the combination of ingredients and actives based on an understanding of scientific principles.
The scientists and technologists in all our businesses are masters in doing this and they work as one in giving ICI leadership in formulation science. I invite you to take a tour of our technology pages and look at the examples of how our customer-led innovations are helping to meet the needs of consumers today and tomorrow, wherever they are.
