Benchmarking

ICI participates in corporate benchmarking schemes to ensure that its approach to sustainability management is in line with best practice in our sector and among leading companies.  While we believe we are making progress, we are aware that there is more we must do to continually improve our contribution to sustainable development.

The benchmarks include assessments for Socially Responsible Investment Funds and Indices in Europe and the USA.

We also use detailed performance comparisons with peer companies. For example we benchmark our safety, health and environment performance with leaders in the chemical and utilities sectors in our quest to maintain a safe environment for our employees.

Since 2003 we have been using our new Safety and Health reporting system based on the USA OSHA Total Recordable Cases (TRC) measure.

The OSHA TRC rate integrates safety and health performance. It goes beyond the ICI Classified Injury and health reporting through a more comprehensive inclusion of restricted work cases. It therefore provides a more inclusive picture of total harm to employees and contractors and provides improved benchmarking with peer companies.

Based on data produced by the American Chemical Council, our performance is in the top quartile of medium and large chemical companies.

Business in the Community (UK)

We no longer take part in the Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility or BiE indices, after having been involved for many years. Following discussions with some of our investors, we focused on the prime stock market sustainability indices to benchmark our performance against our peers.
