One of our commitments is to be transparent in publicly reporting our sustainability objectives and performance each year. This builds on ICI’s practice dating to the early 1990s to publish in full the results of our safety, health and environmental performance each year. Archived ICI sustainability and SSHE reports can be found in the
Publications and downloads
section of this web site.
In reporting our sustainability performance, we aim to follow the relevant recommendations of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). We also follow the guidelines of Environmental Reporting published by the UK government, as well as their issue guidelines on reporting greenhouse gases, water and waste. We have also participated in the development of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development Eco-Efficiency Metrics.
Since 1996 we have employed independent experts to verify the reporting against our Challenge objectives. During 2006 we re-appointed Enviros Consulting as our verifiers following a competitive tendering process.
The verification process involves assessing the processes and management systems used to collect and report business data, the aggregation calculations, as well as assessing performance against the objectives. Up to 2005, the process has involved interviews with safety, security health and environment managers in the main ICI businesses and the central SSHE function and site visits to review detailed data collection systems. In 2006 this has been extended to include the HR and community data collection processes, verification of all Sustainability Challenge 2010 objectives and confirmation of qualitative statements.
