Sustainable development covers a wide range of activities. We have determined priority actions and issues, taking into account the views of our main stakeholders, and we focus our objectives and reporting on these.
Sustainability Board
In 2004 the ICI Board director for Sustainability appointed a Sustainability Board. The members represent all businesses and functions within the Company. The Board’s remit was to define the sustainability strategy to 2010, with specific improvement objectives. In order to do this each business and functional board spent time with external facilitation to identify the key sustainability risks and opportunities for their areas of influence.
Group Risk Management Process
There is an overall Group risk management process, which includes social, ethical and environmental issues. Each business and major function identifies individual issues, which are then reviewed by the Group Risk Committee – senior managers from business and Group functional leaders. The process includes updates (at least annually), with reporting to the ICI Audit Committee. The Audit Committee is made up of independent external directors. The main risk factors and the risk management process are outlined in ICI’s Annual Report.
Issue Management process
Linked to the overall risk management process is an Issue Management system, which includes many specific social, ethical and environmental issues. All areas identified as Group issues are allocated a Group Issue Manager who takes an overview of the issue and the Company’s exposure, takes a forward view and makes plans for mitigation. A number of the position papers are posted on our sustainability website. In some cases, for example REACH, we form an issue team, with representatives from all our businesses.
Business continuity planning and preparedness
Business continuity and emergency planning and crisis management processes are integral parts of our risk management processes. In addition to the Group plan, each business has its own well developed plans and processes, including training and regular scenario testing. We also convene cross-business group to develop detailed plans for any global issues, eg, an Avian Flu pandemic.
