Stakeholder Engagement

We regularly engage with stakeholder groups as part of our ongoing operations. This includes discussions on a range of sustainability issues.  Examples of engagement processes with Employees, Communities, Customers, Suppliers and Investors are given in the performance section.

External stakeholder groups

Our thinking and the evolution of overall ICI Group approaches to SSHE – and more recently sustainability – have been influenced by a number of external organizations. For example, in 2000, we carried out a survey of what global opinion leaders think of ICI on environmental and social issues. We interviewed 22 opinion leaders including pressure groups, consumer organisations, journalists, government and regulatory representatives. We used this feedback to help us develop our future programmes and it continues to influence our decision-making process.

Our Challenge 2005 objectives were reviewed by a number of independent external experts in the UK and USA through focus groups and interviews before we adopted them. For Sustainability Challenge 2010 we have identified a Stakeholder Review group including investors , academia and NGOs with whom we have tested our 2010 objectives, and will continue to check with them on our progress as the Challenge period progresses.

We also welcome and regularly engage in discussions about our SHE and sustainability performance and areas for improvement, and have developed effective relationships with a number of external groups, from NGOs and governments to investors and community leaders. Examples of specific feedback from sustainability and environmental benchmark indices are given in the Benchmarking section of this website.

We seek to learn and adopt good practice from the experiences of others through our association with organisations such as Forum for the Future, Business in the Community, the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry  and  Business and the Environment, and Earthwatch.
