We set ourselves stretching targets, and we measure our performance against these objectives, which we call our Sustainability Challenge series. These objectives cover the major risks and opportunities of our business operations.
The latest, the fourth in our series of five-year objectives, is Sustainability Challenge 2010. This sets out performance objectives in areas covered by the company's sustainability policy and the ICI Way:
Our business operations, including regulatory compliance and updating the ICI Code of Conduct
Our employees and health and safety, including reducing employee and contractor injuries and illnesses and implementing the ICI Employment Principles
Our environmental performance, including further improvement in performance in greenhouse gases, other emissions, water and waste.
Our customers and product supply chain, including a new procurement code and further improvements in Product Stewardship
Our external relationships, including community involvement and other stakeholder engagement.
Sustainability considerations are an integral part of our Group risk management process, yet we do not see Challenge 2010 merely in terms of risk avoidance. We aim to add value and deliver positive benefits not only for the businesses but also for our customers and other stakeholders.
The new Sustainability Strategy and Sustainability Challenge 2010 were the culmination of a project carried out by the Sustainability Board, involving the Executive Management Team, each of the Business and Functional Boards and range of other internal and external stakeholders. The process was facilitated by Forum for the Future, a UK-based charitable sustainable development organization. A review group of external stakeholders, including investors, academia and NGOs, has been formed to monitor progress and further develop the objectives as the Challenge period progresses.
